Where on (Google) Earth #203

I'll be honest: I don't know a thing about this place. Back when WoGE was young and I was competative about it, I teed up a whole bunch of potential spots to use so that I wouldn't have to waste time looking for a new spot. I thought this looked neat, so saved the picture. I did not write down the location. So get cracking folks, and if you know what creates this bizarre landform, please tell the rest of us. Schott rule is in effect, and winners list is at:

What is the Shott Rule? Is it similar to the Schott Rule?

It's from the song: I "Shott" the Sheriff.

Sorry Ron. Fixed.

"But I swear it was in sediments..."

OK, I just relooked up the site, and the current google earth imagery is the same as what is shown here, so the location hasn't been re-imaged in the last 2 years. In the good old days, people who couldn't find it would leave comments saying what they were thinking, so that their friends would have a clue...

I'm getting a tonsil carved out tomorrow, so there will be no clues from me for a while. But I will say this: When I picked this spot, I was trying to correct for the geographic bias mentioned in here, by picking an area that was very much undersampled in WoGE at that time (with somewhere around 100 rounds played).

I’m not a geoblogger but I follow a couple of them, this is the first time I’ve come across WoGE and my first instinct was right, managed to find this location on Google Earth in about 5 min, could anybody please let me know the rules? Would it be terribly bad form to for me to start a geoblog (I’m a masters geology student) to host the next round? I’m not giving the location in case I step on some toes or break rules I don’t know yet.

nic, post the lat, the long, and as much geology as you can deduce from the picture. How you figured it out is good too, if it makes a good tale.

The lat and long are the easy part, 59° 6'37.04"N, 67°16'36.71"E.

I got it by remembering an insert from one of David Attenborough’s documentaries, exactly which one escapes me right now, about thermokarst landscapes. So I started hunting Northern Russia and got them not long thereafter. The only problem I see here is these are pretty big and possibly to far South so I may be off the mark with my guess about these lakes being formed by frost heaving and collapse when thawed.

OK nic, you may post the next one, or email me a screen capture to post here if you don't have a blog.
