Retrenchment blogging, day 30
I'm unemployed!
Also, a bit tipsy.
And yesterday, I got an official job rejection letter. It was from a government agency, and they can only hire permanent residents if no qualified Australians apply. So that was pretty much expected. Still. Anyway.
I had a good chat wth everyone else who got sacked today- the board stopped operations, so everyone from the managing director down to the fieldies is looking for work. Maybe if we'd driven a prius to Washington they would have bailed us out. Oh well. The chairman has a point, which is that if good results don't raise the shareprice or atract investment, there isn't much point spending the money needed to get the results. Still, it is a bit frustrating to have to walk away from half finished projects. Oh well. Welcome to the real world. I leave it to a junior geo 10 years from now to dig up our reports and ask his boss, "Why didn't the drill this one out?"
In the mean time, anyone with 5 cents in their pocket can pick up not one, but two shares of uramet stock. It floated at 20 cents.

Hey Chuck,
I just have to say that I'm really grateful you're blogging about this experience. It's one that a lesser blogger would have swept under the rug, but it's valuable to have the story told. I think it's brave of you to do, and I sure hope it's over quickly!

Thanks Callan,
I kind of assumed that since nobody was commenting on retrenchment blogs, nobody was reading them.
And there are far better bloggers than I who have been blogging little during their job hunts...
I've been reading them. I agree with Callan that it's brave of you to be writing about it and very interesting for us. I really hope you find something soon.
<hug>
Yes, I've been reading, also.
As a consultant, I'm technically never unemployed (ha!). I just occasionally have to find new contracts. Haven't really wanted to blog about that, but maybe I will sometime.
From what I've heard, people are expecting things to get better sometime after the first of the year, but that's pretty vague, and I haven't run into any info about Australia. I have heard of jobs in places like Mongolia. Also, I have one contact in Australia, working in a different country - I could send you an email about that. Don't know if it would be helpful?
I am wishing you the best of luck on this.
I also read... Thanks for writing.
Chris
I feel your pain. I went along the mining sundowner in london the other week (a gathering of geologists) to find myself a job. But all I got was an earful of moaning about the crappy market. I'm now looking for productive things to do while the market sorts itself out!

Oh, we read, but we don't have much of any use to say, sorry.
