Mass is conserved. volume is not. if you crashed the Moon, Mercury, and Mars into Venus, the resulting planet would have a smaller volume than Earth. The whole reason that Earth is 6% denser than Venus is solely due to gravitational self-compression.

And if you read the big blueC W Mageehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09706100504739548720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20092824.post-60681329939224255312008-01-26T03:44:00.000+11:002008-01-26T03:44:00.000+11:00Nice diagram, but to pick a "nit," your seminar sh...Nice diagram, but to pick a "nit," your seminar should have defined "bigger" a bit better. Using numbers from Wikipedia (yeah, I know, but it's the handiest source right now...):

Mercury + Venus + Mars total up to about 0.977 Earth masses.

But things tilt the other way if you look at volume. The total volume of Mercury + Venus + Mars = 1.07 times the volume of the Earth.
<Sam Wisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02248173845100723924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20092824.post-88081018488984553112008-01-25T15:22:00.000+11:002008-01-25T15:22:00.000+11:00I never realized how fluffy Mars was before!I never realized how fluffy Mars was before!Old Bogushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10439927444541621652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20092824.post-57541766762323684402008-01-23T01:44:00.000+11:002008-01-23T01:44:00.000+11:00Pretty diagram.Pretty diagram.ScienceWomanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11252480538852802610noreply@blogger.com
